Six Ways to Take in the Beauty of Te Anau

Te Anau is not only the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, but also a beautiful place to stop and spend a night or two. Situated alongside the South Island’s largest lake, the picturesque town centre welcomes visitors from near and far for year-round adventures. We invite you to gain a deeper connection with the people and places that make Fiordland so special – and here’s a few ways to get you started.

Take a stroll

Whether you’re up at sunrise or you’ve pressed the snooze button a few times, start your day with a relaxed stroll along the Te Anau lakefront with a coffee from Sandfly Cafe in hand. Or for the ultimate wake-up call, take a quick morning dip in the lake to freshen up for the day ahead!

Set sail

Hop on a boat tour and experience Lake Te Anau up close and personal! If you are on a tight timeframe, Fiordland Historic Cruises offer the perfect snapshot of the lake’s highlights on a morning, afternoon or evening cruise. If you have a bit more time, venture further into the remote wilderness with Southern Secret’s overnight Doubtful Sound cruise. Switch off from daily life and explore a virtually untouched corner of New Zealand, with sightseeing opportunities aplenty. Alongside the breathtaking mountains and dramatic waterfalls, keep an eye out for marine life such as bottlenose dolphins, penguins, and seals as you cruise through the tranquil landscape.

Make a splash

Whilst Fiordland might not be home to golden sands and tropical temperatures, the beaches of Te Anau and Manapouri are still a picture-perfect spot to unwind and have some fun. With water temperatures ranging between 12°C in winter and 16°C in summer, the top five beaches are ideal for swimming, wharf jumping, kayaking, water-skiing or simply enjoying a picnic with friends and family.

  • We had a great stay at this lovely hotel on the lakeside at Te Anau. We booked a lake view upstairs room and it was perfect! Comfortable bedroom, spacious lounge with kitchen area and a little terrace to enjoy the view. We were welcomed warmly and given a helpful map and some recommendations for supper and breakfast all of which were excellent. We were able to park the car for the time we were there and enjoy our trips to Milford Sound and the Glowworm caves. So a very relaxing time in our tour of New Zealand. Highly recommended.

  • Best place we have stayed in New Zealand. We had a lovely one bedroom ground floor apartment. After travelling for 3 weeks it was lovely to have space and kitchen amenities. The property is obviously very well maintained and is very modern. Staff were very nice and helpful. The bedroom had a very large king bed and single and great big walk in shower with lovely large towels. Don’t hesitate to book Radfords on the Lake.

  • We loved the comfort, modern style and lake views of the Radford. We had a suite with a kitchen, living room and bedroom. Being on the second floor was a plus for the views. Kerri, the receptionist at check in office, was extremely helpful before the trip and while we stayed at Radford. She goes out her way to help you book excursions, find good restaurants, anything you need.

  • We are on our 11th day of our New Zealand tour and this is by far the best place we have stayed a night during our trip. The presentation of the facilities from the outside is absolutely fantastic. Excellent parking! Checking in was a breeze. Our room is absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful views of the lake. Tonight was blue skies and wonderful sunset. I was so delighted to see cold water in the fridge…..I live off cold water so it just made my day. Cannot go wrong staying here….just absolutely fantastic

  • Wonderful place to stay. Spacious and spotless suite with nice views of the lake. Good location, a short walk from town centre. Kerri was very helpful recommending things to do/places to eat. Service/support was fabulous during a power outage. Kerri brought candles, flashlight and thermos of hot water so we could make hot drinks and then invited us to a barbecue for dinner that night. A truly amazing place.
