Our passion for the environment

Kaitiakitanga is a Māori term that means guardianship of the land. We never take our stunning environment for granted and are committed to preserving our ‘slice of paradise’ here in Fiordland – we do everything we can to reduce our footprint on the environment. We are proud to have been awarded: 2023 Certificate of Participation in the Sustainable Tourism Programme.

We support the wider Fiordland environment through the following initiatives

  • We are long-time, committed sponsors of the Antipodes Islands Parakeets (Kakariki), who live nearby in the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary – only a 20 minute stroll from Radfords on the Lake! See them in action here
  • We are silver sponsors of the Fiordland Trails Trust, which recently created the Lake2Lake cycle trail linking Lake Te Anau with Lake Manapouri

Within Radfords on the Lake itself, we reduce our environmental footprint via

  • Being proactive with recycling, including donating goods from our apartments to the local church’s second-hand store whenever anything is updated
  • Wherever possible, buying locally and buying in bulk to reduce packaging and freight
  • We compost everything possible and the food scraps get feed to our hens, which supply us with fresh farm eggs.
  • All of our units have been re-lined with polystyrene to contain heat, reducing the energy resources we consume
  • Our bikes are free-to-use for guests, reducing the need for motor vehicles to explore locally
  • We are proudly 90% chemical free  in cleaning and use natural cleaning products
  • We use colour-coded microfibre cloths for each different cleaning purpose – reducing waste

EKSO – Journey towards net zero carbon certification

At Radfords on the Lake, we are deeply committed to environmental sustainability and proud to have achieved Ekos Net Zero Carbon Certification. This milestone reflects the dedicated efforts of Kerri and Katie, who completed the Great South Sustainability Tourism Programme and Katie led our journey through the rigorous Ekos certification process. By carefully gathering and monitoring our emissions data, we achieved 100% Net Zero carbon status—recording 27.72 tCO2e—and implemented meaningful changes such as upgrading ceiling insulation, switching to Meridian Energy’s 100% renewable electricity, and purchasing carbon credits through Permanent NZ Restorative Forests to support the regeneration of 69 hectares in Kaikōura. Katie has also enhanced our environmental compliance by completing a three-day course in Freshwater Farm Planning, aligning with government regulations. These actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to operational excellence, transparency, and inspiring a more sustainable future for our guests, community, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

  • We loved our two day stay at Radfords in Te Anau. We had an upstairs suite looking out over beautiful Lake Te Anau. Conveniently located & within walking distance of the restaurants and bus pick-up points for all Milford Sounds tours. The staff are all long-term employees and they delivered us with one of the cleanest suites we have had, anywhere. Thank-you Kerri and Team.

  • Service was over the top - amazing. We got there on a rainy day and our helicopter tour had been canceled. The lady at the front desk gave us recommendations on what to do & where to eat so our day didn’t go to waste. This hotel is right across the street from the lake with beautiful views! You can easily watch the sunset from your room or go for a little walk along the lake. Very close to all the restaurants too. We loved our stay!

  • This motel was fantastic, far better than I'd imagined. The room was beautiful, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a stunning view. The interior was also very cozy and tidy. I loved the lady at the front desk; she was so kind and gentle, like Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter. Since we were Chinese, she was very patient and explained everything to us, including things to do and eat in town, and reminded us to be careful when driving. The lady was so lovely, and we even exchanged gifts at the end. The room had a wide selection of tea and coffee, a capsule coffee machine, and a fully equipped refrigerator. It was truly far better than I expected. I highly recommend this motel to everyone.

  • My partner and I have always tried to travel on a budget but we had the opportunity to stay at Radfords on the Lake and experience true luxury and WOW!!! It's going to be hard to go back to anything else after this, even my own bed doesn't cut the mustard. The cleanliness is next level, I can't say I've ever seen everything get steam cleaned between guests before. All the little touches they've added really do make all the difference. And the hospitality from Kerri and Dexter was top notch. Kerri went out of her way to help us out when we got into a pickle, and provided great recommendations. We THOROUGHLY enjoyed our stay. And FYI, one night is not enough, stay a few! There's so much to do in Te Anau. (from Amelia & Chris)

  • Kylie at the front desk was very sweet and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. She spent a few minutes giving us local recommendations on places to eat and things to try, which is how we found Sandfly Cafe. Accommodation was very clean, comfy and warm (we were there in the winter). Kitchenette had everything you could need for a short stay. Couldn’t ask for a better location or view in the morning to be able to walk straight across the street to the lake.
Cute, cozy, quiet, and comfortable with the best views. – Jonathan C. August 2025  Read Reviews
